However, since I am curious about the sequel and will be reading that I decided to give this book 4 out of 5 stars.In Gilded, #1 New York Times bestselling author Marissa Meyer returns to the fairytale world with this haunting retelling of Rumpelstiltskin. I had trouble giving this book a rating and was doubting between 3 or 4 stars. I have dyslexia and had no trouble keeping focus on where I was in the story. However, I wished for more character development. I just wanted a bit more of a connection between the two. It especially felt this way since the story was set up to get to this “big reveal” but it is based on a known fairytale so it did not feel like a reveal at all. It is a retelling so there is always this risk that the story drags on for too long since part of the story is already known to the readers.

Sadly, after a while, the story started to feel too slow and felt like it dragged on for too long. Moreover, it felt like a homage to the younger me that loved the Lunar Chronicles. I mean a fairytale retelling about Rumplestiltskin with a darker fantasy feel to it. First of all, the cover is beautiful (and I know I should not judge a book by its cover but let’s be honest a great cover help spark interest). However, when I was browsing the bookstore, this book piqued my interest. I was around 15/16 around the time I read those books and have not read anything from Meyer in years. I read the whole Lunar Chronicles for Marissa Meyer years ago and loved them.
